Rain ja Sandra NEOANDERTALS'ist homme (4.mai) kell 22 Raadio 2 otse-eetris saates "Metallion" Madoxiga juttu puhumas.

Mulle meeldib viimase plaadi kodukootud saund, mis kõlab suht hästi ja selgelt, kuidagi soojalt. Samas, ma arvan et ainult bass ja trummid ei toida ikka sellist muusikaprojekti ära, saab näha kuidas teine basskitarr asjad kõlama paneb.

Kõige paremad kohad lugudes on alati need kus tavapärasest trummi ja bassipõristamise kombodest hetkeks välja tullakse ja jazzilikult instrumentidel harmoonias kõlada lastakse, esitatakse soolosid jne. Mulle meeldiks seda rohkem lugudes kuulata. Instrumentatsioon on hea, tulevikus võiks mõne eepilise kümneminutilise instrumentaali kirjutada.

kurat, postitasin siia just terve pika jutu, miks mulle Neoandertals meeldib ja miks ma loodan, et nad kunagi kitarre ei lisa, aga see lihtsalt ei ilmunud. streigib see foorum siin ikka nõmedalt vahest.

NEOANDERTALS jätkab taas ning alati duona. Põhjuseks uue bassimehe mitteilmumine Ringvaate saate salvestamisele (saade peaks eetrisse jõudma järgmine nädal).

Varsti on oodata uusi livesid ning sügiseks on plaanis ka Euroopa tuur.

"Neoandertals are one of the interesting and most innovative bands in the brutal death metal scene right now. Along with this, they are undoubtedly a band that completely polarizes people into the "Just fucking noise - 3%" category and the "Transcending brutal death metal - 97%" category. They're more than just a band with no guitarist. They're more than just a band with a chick on drums. They're more than just a band with an unique lyrical theme. They're even more than just crazy vegans living in some home-made shack in Estonia. The music is genuinely provoking through it's own being.

Whether it was there intent or not, Neoandertals abstract brutal death metal to such a distant place that it should only vaguely be looked at as death metal, and more as avant-guarde art (oh how pretentious you cry!). If I was to give this album to an anthropologist and say some obscure African tribe made this music with bongo drums and large bambo sticks they would probably study and analyze it for months raving about new forms of communicate. But you know, it's made by two white metalheads, (degenerates in the popular sphere) so those who gives a fuck.

Now apart from the polarizing factor of the band, a factor in giving this album such a high score comes from the fact that I've enjoyed it as much as I did "Neanderthals Were Master Butchers". It is basically an improvement on the same formula - tighter, just as sick, but with even less death metal influence this time around as the bass feels even less... bassy. Let's run over the music.

Semi-randomized battery? Check, the drums are fully competent and get extra marks for being, at times rather strange. Strange? This band seems to be out to define a new way to use the word. Percussive bass attack? Check. I use that phrase because the bass lines here really walk the line between a melodic instrument and a percussive one. Harmonics and higher frequency bass lines/slaps intersperse the songs which break up lengthy indecipherably technical bass sections. In fact bringing things back to the realm of "normal music" for a minute, one of Neoandertals strong points is that the band includes quite a lot of stark moments of dynamics before launching into more of the same. I can only liken it to listening to a 20 minute droning Sunn 0))) track which at some lengthy point introduces a new riff and, in a depraved pyschosis, it shatters your fragile mind.

Next, the vocals. This has always been the strongest point with Neoandertals. Rain's inhumanly low gurgling is the last piece of the absurd puzzle that makes up this band and can do nothing but bring up visions of a mentally childish, brute-like ape creature weilding only violence and burial mysticism to weave his odd tale of carnal destruction. There's little variation on the "urghh, urghh, eerughh, uutth, urrgh" theme and why should there be. Lyrically I've never been a fan of sexual gore focused lyrics while it is done with intelligence here, it's probably the only element "Ebu Gogo" I'm not a fan of - especially considering how perfect the lyrics to "Master Butchers" fit the music. No big deal, a 3% chip off perfect.

"Ebu Gogo Gutting The Child" is brutal death metal that has left the realms of sanity and sailed into a bizzare world inhabited by an african tribe, Captain Beefheart and a jazz bassist possessed with the ghost of Devourment. It's not for the weak of heart, it's probably not even for the "brutal" of heart. Hell, it's probably as a Machine Head fan would no doubt tell you, "just noise"."

Neoandertals “Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child”

Telemagasinist “Ringvaade” sain ma teada, et Lõuna-Eesti metsades, Veelikse külas toimetavad Rain Pohlak ja Sandra Vungi on asunud rajama eluaset, mis rajatud ürgselt (maja ilma naelte ja elektrita) ja pakuks ürgsele võimalikult lähedasi elamistingimusi. Juba varasemast teame, et nende bänd Neoandertals tegeleb inimese eellaste, ürgolendite ja primaatide temaatikaga. Duo teisel kauamängival “kõnelevad” nad Indoneesiast leitud Homo floresiensis’test, kes teadlaste hinnangul Homo sapiens’ide lapsi röövisid ja nendega maiustasid. Niisiis – nad mõtlevad ürgajast, nad laulavad ürgajast, nad proovivad ka omal nahal ürgaega kogeda ja kohe siin tulebki minult plaadile esimene aplaus: “Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child” kostab nii kaugel tehnoloogilisest, keemilisest, kõigest digist ja skisost, infomürgitustest ja -vasturääkivustest kui veel vähegi võimalik. Tõtt-öelda jääb mulje, nagu nad oleks muusika sisse mänginud puust, kividest ja loomanahkadest valmistatud instrumentidega. Tõesti. Kui nad ürgset miljööd kastrulisse tahtsid saada, siis see on olemas. Ja aplause tuleb veel.

Järgmine aplaus kohe siit. Bassist Rain Pohlak ja trummar Sandra Vungi treenivad pillimängu kuuel päeval nädalas. Ja kuigi nende brutaalne ürg-metal on tempolt ja suundadelt keeruline ja vapustava kiirusega mängitud, milleni korralikult harjutamata ei küündi, siis selle albumi seltsis olles ei ole hetkekski tunnet, et keegi demonstreerib sulle uhkelt, kuivõrd hästi ja nobedalt ta pilli oskab mängida. Rain ja Sandra on ülima virtuoossuse rakendanud totaalse loomulikkuse edasi andmiseks. Kordan: instrumentide valdamine ei ole “Ebu Gogol” show-off, vaid talitsematu, ettearvamatu ja kohutav looduse jõud.

Rääkides kiirusest. Ja keerulisusest. Jah, Neoandertalsi muusika podiseb ja rabistab lakkamatult ja selle kohal kõlab Raini meloodiavastane süvakurgukorin. Kõik see võbiseb läbi sinu keha ja paneb haavalehekese kombel võdisema. Niimoodi tantsitab sind ürgne vibra, selleks, et sind rahustada, tummine müdin muutub paitavaks loodushääleks. Ma ei ole ammu midagi nii teraapilist, samal ajal vapustavat ja embavat, midagi nurki ja ärevust mahanülgivat kogenud, kui seda on isegi paljas mõte või meenutus Neoandertalsi plaadile seatud muusikast. Jällegi – aplaus.

Ja juba ma aplodeerin sellepärast, kuivõrd kohatu ja paigutamatu on Neoandertalsi looming. Paberite ja atribuutika järgi oleks justkui tegu metal’iga. Kardan, et üks keskmine metal-inimene neid päris omaks ei võtta ja suhtub lugupidavamal juhul kui “huvitavasse” marginaalsusesse. Ega tõesti… Siia kängitsetud tervik, filigraanse pillimängu, sõgedalt ambitsioonikate pööretega, toob silme ette pigem džässi. Võib-olla vaid seetõttu, et mind on vangistanud bass ja trumm ja nende kaasahaarav koostöö, hüüatan ma “Funk!”, kuid sedasi ma siiski hüüatan. Ja et see on nii puust ja kivist, mudane ja mullane, kõlab “Ebu Gogo” rohkem folgina kui kõik aastate jooksul Viljandi Pärimusmuusikafestivalil esinenud artistid kokku korrutada tuhandega. Helide kogum, mis näikse pärinevat ajast, kui ei tuntud ei sõna “folk” ega “muusika”. Kui mõni plaat peaks öko-poodides müügil olema, siis on see Neoandertalsi oma.

Viige “Ebu Gogo” kingiks igale sünnipäevale, kuhu olete suundumas, ja terve peoseltskond mäletab teid vaimustava inimesena elu lõpuni. Ehk siis – Neoandertalsil on anne, mida tuleb kõigiga jagada, isegi selle hinnaga, et te end ise Lõuna-Eesti ürgpuristajate rabava originaalsusega ehite. Kui sel aastal ilmunuks vaid üks plaat ja see oleks just “Ebu Gogo”, oleks ma eluga rohkem kui rahul. Hoolimata sellest, et ma ka kõike muud kuulan – kogu ülejäänud muusika on Neoandertalsi kõrval talumatu lärm ja müra. 10

From time to time, the metal scene is simply scattered by an innovative band, that breaks all the existent rules. It happened often in the past, Celtic Frost, Venom or Therion being a very good example. Unfortunately, being the very first ones to experiment something is a risk - the audience or the critics may not understand your ideas and you'll be smashed away, fading into oblivion. How many of you remeber Angel Witch, Possessed or Sarcofago? Pretty sure you all know better Iron Maiden, Death or Sepultura, don't you?:)
Anyway, let's get back to our business. Right from the start - the name of the band and cover art, I imagined that Neoandertals is dealing with some grindcore or brutal slamming death metal stuff. Well, they did, but in their own particular odd way!
First of all, there is no guitars to be found here!!! No, my brothers, the band consists only of two members: Rain Pohlak (bass and vocals) and Sandra Vungi (drums). Still, they fucking fill the sound, giving brutality in a new unimagined shape. The bass score is amazing, Rain proving his exceptional skill, slamming all the devils from his chords!
On the other hand, Sandra is simply stellar, hitting the drums in many various and unexpected ways.
Vocals are consisting most of low "urrggghhh" grunts, typical to grindcore, but they're such perfect here, creating a really stone age atmosphere. The music is often very jazzy, with odd time signatures and dissonant chords, but still brutal as fuck and mind-blowing. The band improvises a lot and you'll not find many usual musical structures here. This can be regarded as a true soundtrack of the ancient stone age, where first men fought for survival, in a world full of chaos and uncertainity.
This is not an easy to digest record, not even for open-minded listeners like me. But once you get used with this strange approach of brutal genre, you'll find a great new sonic universe.
This album is a landmark in a genre that's very limited and strict by its very own definition. Probably the band won't recieve the recognition they deserve, but I'm pretty sure that, after many years, this album will be regarded as a classic album and cited as major influence for many future bands.

Hämarate ja unustatud aegade varju taandunud kütid, primitiivse ja sünge olemusega neandertali inimesed on tänaseks päevaks meie seast jäädavalt lahkunud. See, kuidas nad elasid või pidanuks elama, on siiani kaasaegse homo sapiens‘i fantaasia ning teoreetiliste ja praktiliste avastuste summaarne nägemus. Oletada me ainult võimegi, – saame -, sest aeg on oma töö teinud, ja jätnud alles need mõningad üksikud killud paljudest, mille kokkupanemiseks puudub ainuõige juhend. Puuduvate või kadunud kildudeta pole võimalik korrektset pilti taastada, võib-olla kaugelt lähedane, kui sedagi. Väidetavalt suhelnud neandertali inimene poollaulvas mõminakeeles. Vähetõenäoliselt jõuti seesugusele intellektuaalsele tasemele, mis võinuks viia pärimusmuusika arenemiseni. “Neanderthals Were Master Butchers” (2007) ilmudes olin ma veel võrdlemisi suur death metal‘i nautleja ja kugistasin toda albumit huviga. Säherduse muusika austajate seast oli kosta erisuguseid kommentaare: kes pidas seda albumit tolle aasta üheks geniaalsemaks, kes aga üheks jubedamaks ja seosetumaks. Esikalbum salvestati koosseisus Rain Pohlak bassil ja vokaalidel, ning Roland Seer trummidel. Üsna kohe peale albumi salvestamist 2006. aastal liitus bändiga trummarina Sandra Vungi, kes on tänaseni püsima jäänud ja arenenud nende aastatega Eesti üheks võimekamaks naistrummariks (räägitakse, et nad pidavat nädalas kuus päeva harjutama – raske töö viljad). Peale viimase albumi salvestamist lisandus koosseisu teine bassist, keda hetkel enam bändis ei ole ja kellega vist paraku ühegi esinemiseni ei jõutud. Seda oleks tahtnud kuulda.

Juba “Ebu Gogo Gutting The Child“-i avanootidest alates on selge, et leebe kõrvailu ja turvalise meeleolu garanteerimine ei ole Neoandertalsi prioriteediks, vastutus langeb sinu enda õlgadele. Ajalüüsi väravad avanevad ja paiskavad sind mõnekümne tuhande aasta tagusesse ajajärku, kuhugi Euroopa tühermaale. Uudistad ümbrust, kõnnid mööda tasast jõeäärt ja tõused lähedal asuva kõrgendiku otsa, ja heites pilgu kaugele eemale, jääb sulle mulje, et selles äärmiselt looduskaunis kohas pole peale sinu ja sinu “jumala” kedagi teist, kõrvale jättes mõned tavapärased loomad, keda sa oled varemgi oma tavapärases elukeskkonnas kohanud. Varsti kuuled lähenevaid samme – lohakad ja venivad, astujaid on rohkem kui üks. Mühatused ja korinad, linnud muutuvad närviliseks ning tõusevad õhku. Tunned, et pead peitu pugema. “Neanderthals Were Master Butchers” ühtlane ja sültjas mass on asendunud selgelt eristavate kihtidega, olgu nendeks trummid, bass ja korinad. Keerukad, džässiliku allegooria meelaste kombitsate vahel hüpitavate struktuuride tormakus ja pidev meeleolu- kui suunamuutused, üksmeelselt ja mängleva kergusega muutustega ühinevad kihid/instrumendid, valmistavad kuulajale omamoodi huvitava elamuse, kas see talle meeldib või mitte. “Ebu Gogo Gutting The Child” lood nõuavad nende esitajatelt üksjagu oskusi ja vastupidavust ning kuulajalt parasjagu valvsust ja kannatust, et too pideva raputamise kestel alla ei kukuks.

You'd think that by the 21st century, long-extinct species of pre-humans would be content with lying dead in their stony graves.

Approximately 150 years after the anthropological discoveries in Neander Valley, various forms of extinct hominids all over the world came back to life with an intent to kill and eat every homo sapiens on the planet. This was the topic of the first album by the brutal death metal band Neoandertals, titled "Neanderthals Were Master Butchers." Their new release narrows the scope and takes us into the island of Flores where folklore has preserved the memory of a lost tribe of tiny human-like child-abducting creatures, known to science as homo floresiensis. Like the debut, this one is also a concept album, and it details the relationships of a young human girl and a group of the creatures that local legends call Ebu Gogo.

As those among you with more evolved brains have already deduced, it's not all fun and games for the girl involved. In fact, the nine tracks on the record describe her premature defloration, a lengthy rape sequence, and eventual gruesome death. Now there is something undeniably romantic about being ravished with fossil cocks, and the songs make no secret of that. The lyrics are charming, complete with some obligatory bad English, with only the lack of obscure medical terminology separating it from gory death metal perfection:

"They saw love as we see death
A playful play, joy from fresh cadavers
After death-day
Most painful of fuckings and feasts of the night"

When it comes to the band's music, it might be that I'm not the best judge, considering my interest for death metal is moderate at best. But Neoandertals does it for me. Maybe it's because they stray quite far from the norm. There are really only two important aspects to their sound: the extreme speed and the omission of a normal guitar. The band's instruments consist of a masterfully handled bass, drums that work like a sexually aroused Geiger counter in Fukushima, and abyssal growls. All this comes together to create a seemingly chaotic noise that resembles mentally challenged ape-men arguing over how to best drill a jackhammer into your heavily-sedated skull. A truly befitting genre label for Neoandertals would be "fucking crazy caveman shit." The bizarreness of the sound fits a band that comprises a vegan couple writings songs about cannibalistic necropedophiliac undead Gollums. And it's all totally enjoyable - with the exception of unwanted bowel movements that occur when you turn the bass up too much.

Neoandertals' music boasts a genuine paleolithic atmosphere - something that brutal death metal almost never has. It's easy to imagine a frantic caveman orgy around a roaring campfire that overlooks a moonlit prehistoric jungle. Every feeling that the album evokes is intentionally primitive - as if an ancient cave artist, when tasked by his tribe's chief to paint some elaborate phallic symbols, took his best tools and simply drew up a fat dick. "Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child" stirs our most basic instincts and primeval fears... fears about light simian feet rustling in the undergrowth, about disproportionately large hobbit phalli held erect in anticipation of a brutal gang bang, about crude flint knives prepared to cut you up, about bloodshot eyes glaring at you hungrily from the bushes...

Hold it, what was that noise? Oh, hi there, little guy! Wait... you're an Ebu Gogo. Oh my God, they're here! THEY'RE HERE!!!

Muidu vahva arvustus, aga ma pole nõus iseloomustusega "obligatory bad English". Neoanderingliš ei sarnane eriti sellele va "obligatoorsele" death-metal-bad-englishile; fraaside-lausete ülesehitus võib paista pentsik ja rähklev, aga need ei kriibi sellel tasemel, nagu viiendas klassis võõrkeele õppimisest loobunud Põhja- või Ida-Euroopa blackimehe jampsimine, vaid hoopis hoolikalt läbimõeldud moel. mu jaoks oleneb täitsa bändist nt. metali puhul ei vaevu kunagi sõnu lugema, ei näe mingit vajadust, kui aus olla. kui nüüd mõtlema hakata, siis väga üksikute bändide puhul sõnad üldse kepivad.

Sama siin, kokku võibolla neli-viis bändi/artisti on, kelle puhul ma sõnu kuulan ja loen. Ülejäänutest on savi, muss on nii palju olulisem.

Neoandertals laseb välja oma kolmanda albumi "Australopithecus" 17-ndal veebruaril 2012. Album on lindistatud juunis 2009 Järve talu garaažis, Arulas, Otepää vallas. Trumme mängib sellel plaadil Roland Seer, kellega sai aastal 2006 originaalkooseisus ka "Neanderthals Were Master Butchers" salvestatud.

"Australopithecus" on pühendatud vähemtuntud ja primitiivsematele hominiididele ning on muusikaliselt seekord hoopis midagi muud. Leidlikud trummid ja madalaimad bassihelid moodustavad värskelt instrumentaalse, vokaalideta koosluse.

I was just telling someone today that doing SFM666 was cool because every once in a while I learn about a new exciting band from somewhere I've never been. I should be more careful of what I wish for. On first listen the NEOANDERTALS sound like Estonia's Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. For those of you who don't know that's the rhythm section for the Discipline jazz fusion era of KING CRIMSON back in the 80's. The NEOANDERTALS are a two piece act consisting of Rain Pohlak on bass and Sandra Vungi on drums. (although when this was recorded Roland Seer was on drums) This is an instrumental jazz fusion release albeit with a twist.

While I was absorbing all of what Australopithecus had to offer I was also doing some research on NEOANDERTALS in order to get an understanding. Musically it's fairly tribal as well as primal in structure which goes with what I found. Essentially this duo are back to nature types who live in their own self built cabin out in the country. (there's a documentary clip filmed by the Estonian National Television on Youtube) Ironically you need electricity to plug in your amps as well as record your music but that's neither here or there. The band has two previous full length releases: Neanderthals Were Master Butchers in 2007 and Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child from 2010, both of which had vocals.

This new one has no vocals then again I'd be hard pressed to imagine applying vocals onto any of these tracks. If I was a toker (you know what I mean) then I could see relaxing, spacing out while listening to these neolithic jams fill the air with eclectic rhythms. There are times when the bass rumbles like the bubbling of primordial ooze. The drumming is a sort of long range tribal communication from pre-language times. Yeah I'm giving this my best shot at objectivity although I can just wonder what others have said about this band. In all honesty I didn't know how to exactly describe this.


After multiple plays you do feel relaxed as the beats make for a decent background atmosphere. I had it playing for three hours tonight. Near the end I stepped outside for a smoke along with enjoying the foggy night atmosphere. While out there I thought I saw Bigfoot dancing in the tree line. My thoughts were "oh great I better turn the music off before it brings all the primates out of the woods. The next thing you know is that I'll have a whole back yard full of em dancing in a hairy hoedown." NEOANDERTALS are definitely unique, good at what they do and for fans only.

"Damn, have I encountered feelings on this one! I needed to say it, sorry for that. Having thoroughly listened to “Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child”, Neoandertals’ previous release, I was eager to listen more of their work. As far as I was concerned, these two Estonian death metalers, were all about brutality, technicality, originality and controversy. “Australopithecus” came to nothing but confirm this, except you can cross the word “brutality” from the list.

“EGGTC” quickly became one of my favorite brutal albums ever, and you might need to know it was released as recently as last year. The reason? I’ve always praised independent musicians who dare to do something, almost anything, completely out of normal. Few are those that try it, and even fewer the ones that manage to do it without monumentally fucking it up. The project/band consists on a drummer babe, and a male bass player/growl vocalist, and that’s that! What you get is brutal, technical and mostly unheard death metal in the form of a conceptual album having as central idea the deeds of human’s forefathers, the Neanderthals, as a result. A killer combination if you ask me.

Now of course, avant-garde projects always annoy the critics in almost every single scene, and hey, ain’t talking exclusively about metal or music! Even playing a metal sub-genre most generally accepted such as brutal death metal, whatever that means, Neoandertals have managed to be one of those bands that split the audience into two well defined groups. Either you praise or hate’em. Metal police, those experts in everything that has to do with metal, who know absolutely everything that there is to know about it in despite of the fact most of them still live with their parents and are unemployed, and who love to decide what is and what ain’t metal in the first place, have given Neoandertals several particularly hard times with their comments. Modern works such as this are not for close-minds, that’s fo’sure.

I’m positive “Australopithecus” is gonna bring more experts (HA!) to the group of haters, but don’t get me wrong; in a world where the majority of people listen to total shit, this might be a good sign. The band had stated it clearly in advance:

The third album “Australopithecus” is something really different. Dedicated to lesser-known, simpler hominids, it is an instrumental record containing adventurous drumbeats and a fresh approach towards bass-heavy music.

They meant it. Regarding the drums, I can say they were the very first thing that stroke when listening. I would say drumming might be the reason why this can hardly be considered a metal release. The sound is… almost kind of jazzy, full of counterpoints and syncopes. As a matter of fact, I’m sure Roland Seer, prior drummer for the band and the one who actually recorded this work, is strongly influenced by the most hard-bone hot and free jazz drummers out there, don’t ask me who, jazz music isn’t at all my area of expertise even though this was quite recognizable to me. Expect no blast-beats, no double-kicking on the bass drums, and indeed no punky _toopa toopa_s. At first sight, for a metal listener as myself, it’s easy to feel as though not only the drum lines but the songs themselves were going nowhere. I don’t think this is the most accurate appreciation, yet I must admit even I felt that way, although the Roland’s high proficiency is undeniable.

Once you get over the impression the drums made in you, you’ll be able to listen to the bass lines… and that’s it. This is the most minimalistic metal release I’ve ever heard of! There’s nothing here but drums and one bass line. I mean not even a bassist who overlaps layer after layer of bass riffs, melodies and arrangements to end up sounding as a complex texture, but one bass line per song. I’m not complaining, is just that it was so difficult to swallow. It’s not that in his previous works Rain Pohlak had made us get used to friendly-listening-to songs, but this!?!? That’s gonna be your first reaction (at best) I’m sure; Again ‘twas mine. But also again, once I was ready and listened to it another five times perhaps, it became an acquired taste. Rather than standard music which encompasses rhythm, melody and harmony, bass lines seem to narrate passages of the obscure daily life of the hominids this record is about.

Musically, that was that. Unless you’re somehow familiar with minimalistic, conceptual, contemporary and experimental music (real experimental music, not only a bunch of creeps weirdly and pointlessly adding odd effects to their shitty songs), you’ll find the whole album nonsense.

There’s still one essential aspect I haven’t covered yet. When it comes to the subject of conceptual albums coming from conceptual projects the connections between the ideas that inspired the final work and the work itself are always to be judged, or at least considered. Neoandertals had devoted their previous two releases (I’m unaware of any other work of’em, yet I know they released a demo I haven’t had the chance to check out) to the Neanderthals, a primitive but advanced for their time form of humanoids who lived in Europe and Asia ‘round 28 000 years ago, right before the appearance of the first modern humans on Earth. Neanderthals were advanced indeed; they of course had a language and even some artistic expressions. Neoandertals previous releases were exactly that: brutal yet sophisticated.

The Australopithecus were a much more primitive form of life; extinct 2 million years ago, they were primal hominids, which apparently means they were much more similar to primates than to humans; some sort of missing link between the two species, if you like. As they were mostly animals, they had no verbal language or some kind of cultural expression, not to say any social organization except the one of the herd. “Australopithecus” stands for these characteristic precisely: evidently, there are no lyrics, and the music seems to narrate some aspects of their animal life. It’s kinda bizarre prehistoric documentary-tale that allows the listener to observe a completely different world. Think of it as another cavemen movie. Did you watch “The Quest for Fire”, the film? Have it in mind when judging this one.

I have no doubt haters will hate this. I could agree this isn’t exactly a metal release, though the connection with metal is clear and consistent. Sandra Vungi, current drummer for the band, gently shared this record with me so as to review it here before its official release next Feb. 17th. So you know. I’d like to publicly thank for your collaboration, as well as to close with a final comment: if you’re used to listen to more than the old meat’n’potatoes style, check this one out. It’s worth it."
