Intervjuu Talbotiga Metalnews.de-s

Inglisekeelne variant järgnev:

Metalnews.de (M): Hello Jarmo, it's a pleasure. First off, let's start with your name TALBOT. The first thing I immediately associate with it is the defunct French car company and a photographer who was one of the most important developers of the early stages of photography. How come you chose this somewhat important business and science name for your band? What is your interpretation of it, how does it reflect the work that you do under that flag?

Jarmo/Talbot (J): Hello there.
Hehe, well, it's mostly influenced by the car. Especially the Horizon. We both liked this robust car for it being.......robust. Somehow it felt to be a good name for a band, sounded good.
Later on we discovered that it actually suits our music as well. On one side Talbot's music are really robust as Talbot Horizon, but on the other hand there's also some beautiful moments hidden in the wall of noise – and that's like Talbot Lago, one of the most beautyful and elegant car in the world.

M: Is there any quintessential goal TALBOT wants to reach at all costs at the end of the day and if so, what goal is it? What is it that makes you play music in this very band, what speciality can be witnessed within the world of your music that no other group can offer?

J: Sounds like a world's oldest cliché, but our goal is to give people the emotion. The emotion that we get from it ourselves.

M: What is life like in being a member of TALBOT, what does it take to be part of this band? Since you only consist of two people so far, how great are the chances for other talented and motivated musicians with similar stylistic approaches join your team permanently? To what extent do you enjoy being a duet and when do you wish to have more people around you making the music you love to play?

J: Doing Talbot is probably the best thing that we have ever done. We both been played in quite a lot of other bands before as well. But with Talbot everything just seems to fit perfectly.
About some other members – never say never, but at the moment we have'nt even been thinking about more members.

M: You are hailing from Estonia, a country known for its bloodless musical revolution and, for me in particular, the most interesting Stoner/Doom/Downtempo scene in Europe. Give us a little into the blossoming scene of Tallinn, Tartu and fellow cities. How is the interaction with other bands that have a somewhat similar style to yours? How hard or easy is it to organize concerts, get people together to be part of your music and have a decent record distribution?

J: Well, it's not a big scene, but is growing. In here usually everybody knows everybody and are friends with eachother.
Organizing concerts is also quite easy. Usually some friend is working in some club for example and as said – everbody kinda knows everybody. It's a small country:)
Best place for promoting your event is to usehttp://www.rada7.ee
Most of the interested people are watching it, so it beats even the posters and flyers.

M: Now on for some strictly theoretical questions about the sounds you create: When it comes to influences, do you rather get your ideas from everyday life, popping up "at random" or do you all set down in order to work on ideas? Is TALBOT driven by influences inside its membership or are there also influences from your immediate environment to be called crucial for certain arrangements? If there are, can you name any specific events which caused certain songs or ideas to happen? And how you avoid having too prominent influences show through your music, i.e. what is your secret for sounding so unique?

J: Usually we just jam and the “right” pieces get together somehow to evolve more further. I'm sure that we are influenced by a lot of other music and everyday surroundings, but maybe we're just good at hiding it.

M: How do songs change from being mere ideas to the final result we, as the people consuming TALBOTs music, can now listen to? How do you generally create new hymns, if there is a certain pattern to it? When do you know when a song seems to be finished in your opinion? What trademarks should a song from TALBOT have at any given time?

J: Yeah, they do change quite a lot from being an ideas. We jam, or play around with some riff or idea that one of us has made. From there the first ideas evolve and mix with other riffs and at some point it feels right. For finishing touches it's always good to play the new songs to the audience - it different from the rehearsal room and shows us the weak links. Just relying on our intuition.
We finish our songs quite quickly actually. In a lot of rehearsals we “shoot blanks” and sometimes even our mood gets low because of that, but then comes again this period when new songs just come together. It's like a ray of light:D Then we just push the pedal to the metal, cause after this short period of time we're empty once again. Until the next “enlightment”.

M: Your first sign of life to the outside world was for downloadable EP "Tundra", released back in 2008. What message or feelings do you wanted to deliver through the songs on these EP? How was it like to record this gem, how confident are you with the end result? What elements would not be there if it was not for professional recording and which tracks have gained the most out of this recording in your opinion? Which tracks have proved to be the crowd's favourite in all the shows you've played over the last years, which ones are the most fun to perform?

J: With Talbot we kinda wanted to keep it simple and not go to a “real” studio, like we had done many times before with our previous bands. We believed to be good enough to make it ourselves. Tundra is just the piece of it's time. Like all the others are probably going to be as well.
Our favourite track..... They're all lovely to us of course. Track #3, “Tundra” have some special aura around it. When we recorded the EP, then we only planned to make “Pick-Up Lane” and “20K Years Underwater”, but in the end of the session we just had some urge to play something more and so we just made it with only one take. After, playing it live, this song has started it's own life. Feels like some sort of mystification.

M: Personally, I can't really pick a favourite track out of the three tracks simply because they are all great and coherent to each other. How long did it actually take you to perfect these tracks? Do bad ideas even come up when composing new stuff and if so, do you lay them aside for further perfection or do you ditch them immediately? If you want to, you can bring up an example from the experiences while creating "Tundra".

J: Hehe, we made these tracks in about two weeks. Recorded it in our rehearsal room (drums and bass, played live) and Magnus's living room (synths, vocals, mixing).
Of course there's also bad ideas, and yes, when we discover them, then they're left aside, waiting for their time to come.

M: In the beginning of 2010, you have released a brandnew song called "Combat Zen Speech" which is supposed to be an appetizer for your upcoming album "EOS". Why have you chosen this track? Does it summarize the album best or does this move have other reasons? Which changes respectively developments do you, as an immediate part of the band, point out on this new creation compared with the previously released material?

J: Yes, in our point of view, “Combat Zen Speech” sort of ties together our previous and current stuff. It's a step to the future, while remembering the past.

M: Since "EOS" is coming out soon: What can the fans expect, both content-wise and concerning the artwork? Tell us about the songwriting process and studio sessions for this album. How much time went into finishing the songs and giving birth to them during the recordings? What have you learned from "EOS" which will come handy during the next studio visits? And how can your album be purchased?

J: Songwriting process is actually the same as it was with “Tundra”. We just come together and do something. Just playing and feeling it. When it feels right, then it is right. There have been many times, when we start the rehearsal and then leave shortly, cause this time just felt wrong. So, there's really no point of exhaust ourselves. Next time it's usually cool again:)
“CZS” was made earlier in the beginning of 2009. And all the other material for “EOS” just came with one “block” of time.
So probably the main thing we've learned with making the “EOS”, is about our way of working.

Album will be available on our gigs and from our webpage. Hopefully some more webshops as well, but it's not certain yet. When we'll know about it, then this info gonna be on on our webpages as well.

M: In order to promote this album, you are touring in March and April 2010 through Europe together with a bunch of various groups. Advertise this tour a bit: Will the buying fans be flooded with sound and visual impressions? What can one expect seeing you live? Also, how much do your songs evolve on stage? Describe the difference concerning the band chemistry when playing live and during a show. How much do both worlds differ from each other?

J: “Flooded with sound” is really good expression for it.
Sadly, still no visuals this time. Only few lights.
Usually we don't jam on the stage. We record our stuff mostly as live session (drums, bass), so with this we try to capture the energy to album as well.
With our live show we try to give a good, powerful emotion, that's what it's all about.

M: Are there any other plans made out yet for TALBOT apart from the upcoming tour?

J: After the tour we'll probably take some time off from giving shows, to focus on promoting the album. Dreaming about the vinyl and doing some other organizatory work. Planning next tour and next releases for example.

M: How do TALBOT come across new music from other groups, what recent purchases can you recommend or dissuade from? Which opinion do you share in terms of the nostalgic dogma that has infiltrated from the end of the 90s on?

J: Usually we just hear about new music from friends for example. Internet and all the MySpace is also helpful. But not really looking for the new stuff all the time, don't have the strength to listen for, let's say, 20 new songs or bands per day;)

M: Thanks for your time. If you want to, conclude this interview with your favourite Estonian saying [and a translation of it].

J: Thank you:)
“Hea soe pikutada!" Direct translation is something like: “Nice warm to lay down/relax”. It can be used in about every situation really.
More of a inside joke actually, so we apologize for it.
And, we must thank our soundengineer Raido for this saying. Greets, Raido!
